Description:

The TIE Defender was a prototype Imperial fighter that was developed shortly before the Battle of Endor. After initial testing, which was believed to be personally supervised by top Imperial Navy commanders, the TIE Defender was deployed to a small number of elite TIE wings. Only a few key Navy commanders knew that the ship was used to defeat the traitor, the former Admiral Zaarin, who was guilty of Atrocities Against the Empire.

The vessel represented a radical departure from conventional TIE designs and featured three sets of solar collections panels mounted at equilateral points aroudn the fighter's cockpit. The TIE Defender, was publicly touted as a logical advance for Imperial fighter design. Following specific Navy directives, Sienar Fleet Systems developed a ship that was fast, heavily armed, and a hyperdrive. At over 300,000 per unit, it was more than five times as expensive as a standard TIE Fighter.

The TIE Defender's numerous weapons systems allow it to successfully engage multiple enemy fighters, while the hyperdrive permits the ship to operate independently of support carriers, giving the ship flexibility that was unmatched by any other Imperial or Rebel starfighter. Standard Imperial doctrine called for the ships to be deployed in flights on four, although Imperial commanders took advantage of the ship's surperior design by customising mission forces on a case-by-case basis.

The TIE Defender is one of the fastest prodution fighters ever produced by the Empire: it's nearly 40% faster at sublight that the TIE Fighter. The TIE Defender still follows the same basic twin ion engine model, but utilises the newer P-sz9.7 engines for added speed. Maneuverability has also been improved through the triple arrays of maneuvering jets, making it capable of twists and turns that even the TIE Interceptor couldn't top.

The TIE Defender has four laser cannons and two ion cannons, which can be fired independantly or fire-linked. Rounding out this impressive arsenal are two multi-purpose warhead launchers, capable of being equiped with any major warhead type (concussion missiles, proton torpedoes, etc). The TIE Defender also has a pair of Novaldex shield generators.

While the TIE Defender is one of the most sophisticated fighters ever developed, its cost, combined with the death of the first Emperor, prevented the fighters from seeing widespread use. However, with the rise of another empire, the Imperial Order, under Emperor Larsen, the TIE Defender has come into larger use, especially on fleet command ships. No doubt it will continue to be on the front lines of the fight against the Rebel traitors and other pitiful forces for years to come.
